Description:
This 1958 Bollywood romance thriller narrates the story of Devendra, who on a stormy night drives down a hilly road with his friend to pick up his wife and child from the railway station. The two take shelter in an old mansion off the road after their landslide blocks their path. Once in the mansion, Devendra finds the house uncannily familiar and finds an old portrait which he recognises. Soon, memories of his past life comes haunting and he narrates the same to his friend and the mansion's caretaker. Years back, Anand (now Devendra) comes to the timber estate in Shyamnagar as its new manager. Anand, who is also an artist in his spare time, falls in love with a tribal girl called Madhumati. One day, Madhumati disappears and Anand learns that his employer, Ugranarayan, is behind Madhumati's disappearance. Days later, he meets a girl who looks exactly like Madhumati and she reveals her name is Madhavi. Anand, who refuses to believe her, is beaten up by her companions when he tries to plead with her. Madhavi finds a sketch of Madhumati and realises Anand was telling the truth. Anand convinces Madhavi to pose as Madhumati so he can get a confession out of Ugranarayan. Soon, Anand visits Ugranarayan in the pretext of painting his portrait and begins painting him. A few hours later, Madhumati suddenly appears and a shocked Ugranarayan confesses the truth. Soon after, Anand realises that Madhumati's ghost had really appeared to get Ugranaryan's confession, he follows Madhumati's spirit and falls out of the same window she fell from. The rest of the plot narrates how a tragic incident plays havoc in Devendra's life yet again. Starring Dilip Kumar, Vyjayanthimala, Johnny Walker, Pran, Jayant, Ramayan Tiwari, Ranjit Sood, Shivji Bhai, and Tarun Bose, the film is directed by Bimal Roy and the music is composed by Salil Chowdhury. Watch now and celebrate 100 years of Indian cinema.
